1. Google Launches AI-Powered Learn About for Educational Research
Google has unveiled an experimental AI tool, "Learn About," designed to assist educational research by offering an interactive and visually engaging learning experience. Powered by Google's LearnLM model, this chatbot presents information in the form of quizzes, lists, and contextual data. Unlike traditional AI assistants, Learn About pulls data from trusted academic sources, ensuring reliable insights for research purposes. Currently available in select regions, it is expected to be rolled out more broadly after the testing phase.
2. Google Rolls Out Scam Detection Feature for Pixel Phones
Google has introduced a new AI-powered Scam Detection feature for its Pixel devices, starting with the Pixel 6 series. This feature, powered by Google’s Gemini Nano AI model, provides real-time alerts during phone calls to warn users if the call is likely a scam. It works by analyzing conversation patterns and notifying the user with haptic and visual alerts if fraud is suspected. The feature, which focuses on privacy by processing all data on-device, is available in the U.S. for English-speaking users and can be enabled or disabled at will. It will roll out to additional Android devices in the future.
3. NASA and Microsoft Launch AI Chatbot for Earth Data Insights
NASA and Microsoft have teamed up to develop an AI chatbot called Earth Copilot, designed to simplify access to NASA's extensive geospatial data. The tool aims to make complex scientific data more accessible by answering questions about Earth-related topics, such as environmental impacts and natural disasters. Currently in testing with NASA researchers, the chatbot will soon be integrated into NASA's data platform to enhance public access to vital scientific insights.
4. OpenAI's New AI Agent "Operator" Expected in January
OpenAI is set to release a new AI agent, "Operator," possibly by January 2025. This tool will allow users to complete tasks autonomously, such as booking travel or coding. The agent is part of a growing trend in AI development, with companies like Microsoft, Anthropic, and Google also releasing similar agent tools. OpenAI’s move into this space is seen as a significant step in creating AI models capable of handling tasks with minimal human supervision.
